The Results
Objective:
-
• Increase attendance to the family-oriented event by adding six new venues as well as personally inviting local Truckee Meadows youth groups
• Create a deeper learning experience for the children by creating a four-day workshop with University of Nevada, Reno's (UNR) theatre department
Describe project:
Olsen & Associates decision to change venues increased interest in Discover the Arts events and highlighted Artown's dedication to including family-oriented events in its annual line-up. Before the addition of the different venues, Discover the Arts was held solely at Wingfield Park Amphitheater. Beginning in 2006, we incorporated the following venues: the Nevada Museum of Art, McKinley Arts & Culture Center, Nell J. Redfield Studio Theatre at UNR, Neil Road Recreation Center at Miguel Ribera Park, the historic Lake Mansion and the Pioneer Center for Performing Arts. For the four-day theatre workshop, we worked closely with director Sue Klemp and her UNR theatre department team to create an in-depth look at the art form. Sixty youth attended the workshop and had the opportunity to tour each of UNRs theaters, learn about lighting, create their own sets and costumes and produce a series of small plays which they performed for family and friends on the final day of the program.
Outcome:
-
• Attendance increased by 75 percent from 2,455 in 2005 to a record-breaking 4,300 in 2006
• At Pioneer Center for Performing Arts, 1,500 children attended the Discover Diavolo event, the largest group to ever attend any previous Discover the Arts event
